Every Day is a Hug Day!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are deprived of normal face-to-face interactions, including touching and bonding, with people outside our households. We are in need of hugs now more than ever.

Research has confirmed that hugs are a natural way to reduce stress, feel supported, improve communication and feel part of a community. They allow us to give and receive at the same time and activate our ‘generosity gene’. When we hug the hormone oxytocin is released – which affects the area of our brain relating to rewards, appetite and relationships, promoting our mental health and wellbeing.  According to psychotherapist Virginia Satir, “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Hugging for at least 20 seconds has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones.

So if you are lucky enough to be in lockdown with somebody else or a pet, make sure you take this opportunity to hug them longer and often. However if you are on your own, you can make do by giving yourself a self-hug or even better, hug a soft toy – but make sure you get a proper one as soon as possible!
